Blankets and Onesies and Bibs - OH MY!

I'm waist deep in fabric right now and barely able to sit down to type this post.

I'll be selling my wares at the Ottawa Artisans Guild West End Market.
Details: Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre (Greenview Ave at Britannia Park)
Friday, November 27th (6-9 pm) and Saturday the 28th (10-4 pm).

Another exciting development is that I now can accept credit card payments - yay! Just email me or call (613-747-6871) to start the process.

Here are some examples of what I'll be selling.

This is a cotton baby blanket that's about 1 meter square with a undyed flannel backing and handstitched the way your grandma used to! (they'll be selling for $50)

This baby onesie is hand embellished with a cotton fabric in the shape of a tie for your little man. I now have long sleeved ones as well for our cold winters. (sizes: 6m, 12m, 18m - $20)

Workin' for the Workshop

If anyone is down on the Byward Market, head over to Dalhousie street and check out the Workshop Boutique. They are a funky local shop run by two enthusiastic women who are really committed to supporting local artisans.

If you're in the market for something unique for yourself or your little one, this is a delightful place to shop.

This morning I dropped off 4 of my baby onesies embellished with big business ties and hope that you manage to get down there to check them out. I am paid only when they are sold, so I really (I mean really) appreciate your support!

ONESIES for sale

Remember these tshirts from when you were a kid?
My onesies are reminiscent of those now cool retro t's of the 70's.

I am taking orders for onesies now.

If you would like a shape other than the man's tie, just send me an email or call me and we can work it out. Stars are nice as well as hearts or a lightening bolt.

I had a suggestion from someone on Saturday night that I make dad/kid combo packs. Not sure if they make onesies big enough for dad but would love to make a tshirt for a dad to match a onesie. FUN!

If you want it to be be organic cotton, that can easily be done. If you don't need it to be organic, that can also happen really easily. The cost of a onesie is only $19.95 and I'll have to work out the cost of a combo pack when I do a bit of research on the tshirts.

I need at least 3 days to get the onesie, embellish it and get it to you.

Here are examples of the onesies I embellish.

These particular ones are being sold at Chick Pea Boutique on Wellington Street (near Island Park Drive). The garment is made of 100% organic cotton and the embellishment is made of 100% cotton.

It seems that the business tie shape is what people have wanted most so far, but I am open to suggestions. If you would like to order one, email me (knuffelkids@hotmail.com) or call (613-747-6871) and we'll get started.

Hello All,

Thought I'd bring you up to date with happenings in my life. I've sold a bunch of blankets and reports say that babies are happy all over the place and parents are happy to have something hip around their precious little ones.

I have been asked to make a throw for an adult!! go figure, they get chilly too!

Another thing that I'm really excited about is the little onesies and t's I've been adorning with my own creative whim. I've sold 5 already!!

We're buckling and buying a new digital camera this weekend so I can publish photos of everything and hope that I get some great feedback.

A friend has offered her stash of fabric from days gone by when she intended to sew when she had spare time. With her own business and horses to take care of, she has little time to spare.

I will post the fabrics as soon as I receive them.

Did anyone find sentimental stuff that they would like to turn into a blanket for a loved little one (or a big person too, I suppose)?

quilting - well sort of...

I'm going to take a stab at quilting. Well, my version of quilting.

I've got this fabric from a bag of flour that we bought at the Eco Stewardship Fair in April. Kind of sounds like something a modern Laura Ingalls would say!

I digress... I've got this bag, the logo is quite appealing and I think I may try my hand at appliqué-ing it onto the middle of a fairly plain background. I'll post a photo once it's finished and when we buy a new camera (to replace the one Ashwyn dropped last week).

I hope this gets you thinking about new uses for everyday things.

Do you have fabric that you love but don't know what to do with it?

Maybe you have a table cloth that is sentimental?

A duvet cover that you love but doesn't really suit your bedroom decor anymore?

I can help you turn those lovely things into even more lovely things for a little one. Even if it's a small swatch, we can perhaps use it in the centre of a blanket and build on it to make it really special. (I sigh just thinking about some of the things that people don't use but really love)

Here are some samples from pillowcases (bought at a thrift shop) which may help you to think of things in a different way.

Nathan's blanket

Dave, Shona & little Nathan were presented with one of my blankets in the middle of a cold Canadian winter.

His blanket was therefore made to keep a little guy warm and cozy as his parents spent many a day and night holding him tight.

It's made of cotton jersey in a whimsical frog pattern that parents would be proud to display even when company is over! The backing is soft cotton velvet. This one measures a big 1.5 square metres so I hope it will be used even by parents who need to catch some elusive sleep on the sofa.

Kishan's blanket

Mano (the husband) has a cousin, Mackie. He's married to Heather. They moved to North Carolina last summer and have since had a baby boy - Kishan. (side note: if Mika had been a boy, her middle name would have been Kishan)

In January, Kishan and mom made their first trip together to visit family and friends in Ottawa. I presented him with a lightweight blanket (after all they live in the South) that suited his mom's sense of style perfectly.

Heather has mentioned a few times that I should sell my creations in stores. She has said that mom's pay much more attention to style than ever before and will spend their hard earned dollars on something that is thoughtfully made. Well - I'm following her encouragement and putting myself out there!

I've contacted 3 stores in the Ottawa area and am waiting to hear back from them. Keep your fingers crossed!

Well here is a photo of the most recent one that I made for Laura Bootland at Envirochic.ca and she's asked me to make a couple more to be included in new baby gift baskets. Her baskets are designed to highlight the work that local artisans do as well as provide natural gifts for people with the environment in mind. Check out her art in the gallery section of her site too - very 'feel good'!

What does KNUFFEL mean???

Knuffel is pronounced k NUF el (i.e. you pronounce the k sound) and it's dutch for hug or cuddle.

I had been wracking my brain trying to come up with something that not only spoke to the products that I make, but also sounds like they make you feel - a twist on onomatopoeia!
